3/31/23: Messages to staff about TCTA and AFT Local 6049 collective bargaining agreements

Message to teachers

Dear team,

On behalf of Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association (TCTA) and Tulsa Public Schools, we are pleased to announce a tentative agreement to improve teacher compensation for the 2022-2023 school year.

Tulsa Board of Education President Stacey Woolley said, “I am proud to be the president of a school board and part of a school district that prioritizes teacher pay. With board approval, we will distribute an additional $1.3 million in teacher pay during the 2022-2023 school year. This brings us to a total of almost $11 million in pay increases for teachers during the 2022-2023 school year, despite being flat-funded by the State of Oklahoma. Our teachers need and deserve a wage that reflects their contributions to students, families, and the economic future of Oklahoma.”

Pending board approval, TCTA and Tulsa Public Schools will increase employer contributions to teacher retirement by an additional 1%. This change will improve all teachers’ take-home pay in two ways:

First, this will result in a retroactive adjustment.

By no later than May 2023, all teachers will receive a retroactive reimbursement for 1% of their contributions toward state retirement.

Second, this change will increase teacher take-home pay starting in June.

In June 2023, teachers’ take home pay will increase by approximately 1%. This is because Tulsa Public Schools will pay an additional 1% (for a total of 2%) of the employee portion of teacher retirement.

In addition, TCTA and Tulsa Public Schools are pleased to announce a retroactive increase in apprentice teacher pay. All teachers currently employed as apprentice teachers will receive a retroactive increase from $30,000 to $35,000 per year.

On behalf of both Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association and Tulsa Public Schools, we appreciate all the hard work and dedication with which our teachers serve students and families. This unusual action is a result of our shared and deep desire to continue improving the working conditions for teachers in Tulsa Public Schools.

Sincerely,

Shawna Mott-Wright, Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association president

LeeAnne Jimenez, Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association vice president
