Camrey Asberry named Monroe Teacher of the Year

Camrey Asberry is the 2023-2024 Monroe Demonstration Academy Teacher of the Year!

Camrey grew up in North Tulsa and attended Tulsa Public Schools. This is Camrey's fifth year teaching. She has taught math at Monroe since 2021. She is also the 8th grade class sponsor, site tech, content chair, and site lead at Monroe for New Hope Oklahoma and Gaining Ground Literacy.

"I work in education because I found a passion in impacting and mentoring youth. I am also a 3rd generation teacher. I was raised in a home grounded in love and an importance of education. My educational journey has opened up doors of experiences, life-long friendships and opportunities that I will cherish forever. I hope that I can instill this same passion as my scholars look back on their journeys."

Camrey said teaching in North Tulsa is perfect for her.

"I say we are the best in town. You will not be able to walk through Monroe and not see anyone smiling and having a blast with us," she said. "Our scholars are capable of anything. They are growing up and trying to figure out life. As a teacher, that is what I am here to do. My scholars are literally changing right before my eyes into wonderful young ladies and gentlemen."

Outside of the classroom, Camrey continues to foster connections through mentoring students.

"I am a volunteer coach for the High Steppin' T-Connection Band at Booker T. High School," said Camrey. "My role in New Hope Oklahoma includes providing academic and social supports for students who have a justice involved parent. Gaining Ground is a non-profit that promotes literacy growth through project-based learning."
