The team at Tulsa Virtual Academy is helping parents and guardians learn how to be effective partners in their children's education.
Led by Assistant Principal Kandi Council and Reading Specialist Tandra Morris, Elementary Literacy Night gave families the opportunity learn about MAP assessments and get individualized plans to improve their children's literacy skills.
At check-in, families were given a folder that included their student's MAP testing report and instructions for specific games aligned with the skills each student needed to work on based on their test results. Families were also given a literacy night passport that guided them through rooms where teachers helped them learn the literacy games with their kids.
Research links family involvement with improved academic achievement, school engagement, and motivation. Completing reading activities together outside of school helps with language comprehension, expressive language skills, interest in reading, and their attention in class.
