Memorial HS Pitcher winding up

The primary purpose of our secondary schools is to academically prepare students for graduation so they become productive citizens. However, Tulsa Public Schools is aware of the important role interscholastic athletics play in the development of students. Therefore, a great emphasis is placed on the educational, social and personal welfare of students who participate in athletics.

All TPS secondary schools are members of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association and must follow rules and policies that have been established by the OSSAA. This includes academic and residential eligibility requirements. To be eligible to participate in any TPS athletic program, a physical and medical history form must be completed, as well as, a participation, consent and concussion form must be electronically signed and submitted. A student cannot practice or participate without completed, signed and submitted forms. Visit RankOne for the required forms.

Student athletes, coaches and parents,

This is a very difficult time for everyone. Not finishing the State Basketball Tournament and no spring sports season is devastating for our senior student athletes. Through no fault of your own this has been taken away by a deadly virus that has gripped the world.

Please know that your coaches and athletics directors are here for you should you need anything. The culture changes daily so I encourage you to stay engaged academically. You must continue to work toward your academic goals as well as your athletics goals.

At this time, we must keep all of our athletics facilities closed due to the instructions from the Governor and the State Superintendent of Schools. If and when we are able to re-open our facilities, you will be informed. Continue to workout on your own as our coaches cannot have any physical contact with their teams.

Should you need anything please feel free to contact any of our staff.

During this difficult time we know there might be questions that may develop regarding the interscholastic athletics programs that we offer to TPS schools. Hopefully these questions and answers will help you navigate through the activities portion of the educational experience.

Q: Will the state basketball tournament be played?

A: At this time, the OSSAA state basketball tournaments for classes 2A through 6A have been cancelled.

Q: Will spring sports restart?

A: No, the State Board of Education and OSSAA have cancelled all spring sports for the remainder of the year.

Q. How will this affect my eligibility this spring?

A. Underclassmen will not be affected. An additional year of eligibility for seniors would have to be approved by the OSSAA with a hardship waiver.

Q. Can my coach have a practice session off campus during the suspension?

A. No! We are following “Dead Period” rules which states no coaches, no students and no facilities, period!

Q. Can I work out on my own at any TPS athletics facility?

A. No! All facilities are closed by orders from the Oklahoma State Department of Education and the OSSAA.

Q. Can I use and or rent athletics facilities in the TPS district?

A. ALL facilities are closed for the duration of time that school is suspended. Absolutely no use will be allowed.

Q. Can I participate on a pick-up team during this time off?

A. Two reasons the answer is no. There should be very limited contact with others as the virus begins to escalate in Oklahoma. Your eligibility may come into question depending who and what kind of competition or practice you participate in. Best advice is not to participate in any practice or competition.

Q. Will this affect my recruitment if I am a senior?

A. It could. Put together your statistics and videos from your previous seasons in a resume format and start contacting schools. If we have enough time once the all clear is given to schools, we will want to try and provide a showcase opportunity for boys and girls soccer and baseball. We will have to get clearance for the OSSAA to do so.
