English Language Development Services
Students who are multilingual learners bring a wealth of cultural and linguistic assets to our school communities. Our English Language Development (ELD) Services are designed to help students leverage their existing language skills to increase their English fluency.
who we are
Vision
Vision: Tulsa Public Schools empowers all multilingual learners to be successful in rigorous coursework and enriched academic opportunities that motivate and engage them toward success in college, careers, and life.
Mission: Tulsa Public Schools provides opportunities, structures, and supports for all multilingual learners and their families to be fully engaged in the educational process. TPS values and leverages multilingual learners’ linguistic and cultural assets to better prepare them for success in college, careers, and life.
What We Do
In today’s interconnected global economy, a truly world class education increasingly means learning to listen, speak, read and write in English as well as other languages. Preparing all students for the demands of college, careers, and life now means that students must have the ability to understand diverse perspectives and communicate with people from other cultures.
Tulsa Public Schools’ multilingual learners bring these diverse perspectives and languages to our classrooms. When they can participate meaningfully and equally, their contributions benefit all students. TPS’ English Language Development (ELD) services provide multilingual learners the opportunity to develop the skills they need to bring these assets to the classroom and succeed in school and beyond.
Every Child Succeeds.
In Tulsa Public Schools, we have students who speak one or more of 72 languages.
These multilingual learners make up more than 34% of our enrolled students.
The goal of Tulsa Public Schools’ English Language Development Approach is to provide multilingual learners with quality instruction and inspire learning every day. Such grade-level standards-based instruction is anchored in Tulsa Public Schools’ Vision for ELs and demonstrated through our 6 Principles for Effective English Language Instruction.
why is home language important?
In school, multilingual learners will learn to speak, read and write in English. To encourage the maintenance and development of students' native languages, it's important for parents and teachers to actively connect connect with their first language. The resources on this page explain the benefits of home language development and bilingualism.
