Novice Teacher Experience

Tulsa Way for teaching and learning logo

At Team Tulsa, our goal is to develop and retain masterful educators who are committed to preparing students for college and careers. We accomplish this through the Tulsa Way, which provides world-class hiring, on-boarding, ongoing coaching, and professional development as we seek to embody what great teaching looks like at Tulsa Public Schools. The Tulsa Public Schools Novice Teacher Experience is the first step in welcoming teachers to our team and introducing them to the Tulsa Way.

Who is considered A novice teacher?

  • Any teacher, regardless of their level of experience, who is between their first and fourth years of teaching at Tulsa Public Schools is considered a novice teacher.
  • This includes:
    • Teach for America and Tulsa Teacher Corps participants
    • Newly certified teachers
    • Recently emergency-certified teachers
    • Experienced teachers coming from other districts

How does the program work?

We focus on three key areas to guide and grow our new teachers:

  • Hiring and certification. We are streamlining our application-to-hire process and improving certification supports to get you into the classroom faster.
  • Onboarding. During a five-day orientation you will meet other novice teachers, learn about the Tulsa Way, and explore curriculum and instruction, social and emotional learning. You'll also have a chance to build relationships with students and colleagues before entering the classroom.
  • Ongoing learning. Receive continued support with tiered coaching and an enhanced arc of professional development throughout your first three years of teaching with Tulsa Public Schools.

Novice Teacher Success Story: Erin Edmundson

Fourth grade teacher Erin Edmundson loves inspiring kids. She always knew she wanted to be a teacher and enjoys the close-knit family she discovered at Kerr Elementary.

Not only has she received support through professional development, her colleagues at Kerr are always willing to lend a hand or offer a kind word. "You're given plenty of opportunities to grow and you're given a lot of support no matter where you are," Erin said.
